Fishy Stories from Crested Butte back
Date: Sept. 27-29, 2003

Fisherman: Steve Davis (my brother)

Story: We fished the Taylor River about 3 miles up from Almont. The river is fast moving which makes it challenging to wade and to fish. Both rainbow and brown trout are plentiful in this section of th Taylor River. The largest fish we caught was 16". We caught fish on dry and wet flies. The best fly was a bead-head (for weight) pheasant tail. It was fished as a dropper fly about 2 feet below a mayfly or caddis fly.

We also fished the Gunnison River in the Gunnison Gorge which is about 1 hour driving time from Crested Butte.  Once you get to the trail head you need to hike into the Gorge to get to the river. It is about a 1 hour hike. This portion of the Gunnison River is spectacular. There are lots of rainbow and brown trout and the water is excellent. We used the same flies as above. There are more and bigger fish than in the Taylor River. The drive and hike make this an "excellent adventure" and I would suggest to leave early in the morning to get down to the river and spend the enitre day down there. There were backpackers that had spent the night. Apparently, there are guide services that can float down this section of the Gunnison in one or two day trips.

Steve.
